Target Species - List of Asilidae Species available for DNA-sequence Analyses

The following list provides an overview of species of Asilidae that are currently available for DNA-sequence analyses, i.e. were collected in 96 % ethanol or similar preservatives. This list is primarily based on the collections that Torsten Dikow has access to and does not list all species available worldwide. (For reference of which genes and species have already been sequenced and published check the GenBank database).

A number of people contributed to the collecting or organisation of the specimens in our list and we are very grateful for their assistance. These are:

  • Jason Londt (Natal Museum, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa; (Jason is also building up a collection of ethanol-preserved specimens at the Natal Museum that will be accessible through loan of material in the future)
  • Martin Hauser (California State Collection of Arthropods, Sacramento, CA, USA)
  • Werner Barkemeyer (Museum Flensburg, Germany)
  • Will Reeves (Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina, USA)
  • Jorge Artigas (Universidad de Concepcion, Concepcion, Chile)
  • Michael Whiting and lab group (Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, USA)
  • David Clements (Cardiff, Wales, UK) for collecting Asilus crabroniformis.
  • Hans Pohl (Friedrich Schiller University, Jena, Germany)
  • Eduardo Almeida (São Paulo, Brazil)
  • Jean-Michel Maldes (CIRAD-Amis - Protection des Cultures, Montpellier, France) for collecting Molobratia teutonus.
  • Eric Fisher & Shaun Winterton (California State Collection of Arthropods, Sacramento, CA, USA)
  • Rick Hoebeke (Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA)
  • Daniele Birtele (Centro Nazionale per lo Studio e la Conservazione della BiodiversitÓ Forestale, Marmirolo, Italy)
  • Caroline Chaboo (University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas, USA)
  • Keith Bayless (North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina, USA)
  • Michael Thomas & Chris Maier (Connecticut Agricultural Research Station, New Haven, Connecticut, USA)

  • Julia Almeida & Lucas Cezar (Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil)
  • Danny Wolff (Ebstorf, Germany)
  • I would also like to thank Jason Londt, Eric Fisher, & Aubrey Scarbrough for identification of many species.
  • If you have specimens that could potentially be important for future work please do not hesitate to contact us and let us know. We are happy to curate all collections, house and label them appropriately, and make them available to the robber-fly community. E-mail

The arrangement of genera follows the phylogenetic classification of Dikow (2009) with yet unplaced genera listed at the bottom
